Child screening and pre-school assessments

At Spectacular Opticians, we offer a comprehensive assessment of a child's prescription to assess whether or not they may need spectacles. Our qualified staff look at the health of the child's eyes to check for hereditary problems like cataract, and also for recently acquired problems like eye tumours, infections and signs of inflammation in the eye.

Another common condition found in children is 'lazy eye' or 'squint/turn' in the eye. These problems are in many cases undetectable to the parent and will need an optometrist to diagnose a problem which may later become far more apparent.

Small muscle defects can also often cause significant learning and reading difficulty, so in children of all ages, we carefully check the muscle balance too.

We also have the ability to carry out tests on infants who cannot speak or interact with us. To do this we use 3D images and pictures they may recognise instead of letters, and do several other 'objective' tests which do not require the child to do anything but look at a toy in the mid-distance - (the use of a dim light to shine in the child's eyes will be a requirement in some of these tests).
